This post is about something very important to me.  And it is the second time I’m posting it.  It’s about teaching people how to safely handle firearms and how to use them effectively.
The picture above shows what I would consider to be your stereotypical gun owner teaching a young woman from today’s generation of adults how to shoot one of the more modern guns of our time, the FN FS2000.
The importance of teaching people how to safely handle firearms and how to use them effectively cannot be overstated.  It is so important that we as not only American’s, but as people have this skill.  Because it’s not about hunting, oh no not even close.  It’s about being able to defend yourself.  Your family.  Your neighbors.  Your fellow human beings from a murderer, mugger, rapist, animal or government tyranny.  Firearms are our last line of defense against people lacking the basic human decency to not harm another.
For those of you that don’t know anything about firearms, it’s not like in the movies where the teenage girl who has never used a gun manages to pick one up and is able to use it in a life and death situation.  Far from it in fact.  It’s not like in the movies and it’s not like in video games.  If you don’t know how to operate a firearm… DO NOT expect to be able to pick one up in a crisis and be able to do any good with it.  In fact please do not touch a firearm if you do not know how to safely handle one.
A more mechanically inclined person can likely figure out how to operate a firearm on their own.  This is dangerous and definitely not recommended.  I have taught people who have had absolutely no clue what to do when it came to guns.  Had no clue how the rounds were fed into the chamber.  Had no idea which way the rounds went in the magazine.  I’m confident that after my teaching the people I have taught how to safely operate firearms that they will be able to do so for the rest of their lives.
Please.  I send this request out to all who are armed.  Teach your friends, family, neighbors and anyone who is willing to learn how to safely handle and effectively use firearms how to do so.  This is so important.
And don’t forget the 3 basic rules for firearms safety! (this is my version)
1.  TREAT EVERY FIREARM AS IF IT WERE LOADED.
2.  KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL READY TO FIRE.
3. NEVER POINT A FIREARM AT ANYTHING YOU DO NOT INTEND TO DESTROY.
I choose ‘destroy’ because I think it gets the message across stronger than ‘shoot’.  Discharging a firearm always results in destruction. Either the destruction of objects (target, etc.) or the destruction of life.
Thank you for reading… please pass it on.
